Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) are essential for modern electrical safety. They detect and isolate dangerous arc faults before they can ignite an electrical fire, risks that conventional breakers often miss.
Why Arc Fault Protection Matters
Arc faults occur when current jumps unintentionally between conductors due to:
- Damaged or kinked cables
- Loose wiring or worn terminations
- DIY accidents (e.g. drilling through a cable)
- Rodent/animal damage
- Aged or degraded insulation
These faults produce intense, localised heat that often goes undetected by standard MCBs or RCBOs.
Introducing the KCM Classic AFDD
Built to meet the latest safety requirements, the KCM Classic AFDD range delivers reliable and intelligent arc fault detection, ideal for domestic, commercial, and specialist environments.
How Do KCM AFDDs Work?
Our AFDDs use advanced microprocessor-based technology to continuously monitor the current’s waveform and identify dangerous arc characteristics.
They detect:
- Series Arcs – caused by damaged conductors or loose connections
- Parallel Arcs – between live-neutral or live-earth conductors
Instant Disconnection: When a hazardous arc is detected, the device cuts power immediately, preventing escalation.
Where Are AFDDs Required?
Per Regulation 421.1.7 (BS 7671:2018 Amendment 2), AFDDs are mandatory for all single-phase AC final circuits supplying socket outlets ≤32A in:
- Higher Risk Residential Buildings (HRRBs) – 18m+ tall or 6+ floors
- Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs)
- Purpose-Built Student Accommodation
- Care Homes
AFDDs are still recommended in all other building types.
Why Choose KCM AFDDs?
High Detection Accuracy
Built for BS EN 62606 compliance with superior arc recognition algorithms.
Integrated Design
AFDD + RCBO in a single compact unit.
Trusted Performance
Supported by Kempston Controls’ expert team and distribution network.
Perfect for Compliance
Especially in HRRBs, HMOs, and education or care facilities.
What Makes AFDDs Essential?
Traditional protection (MCBs/RCBOs) covers:
- Overloads
- Short circuits
- Earth leakage
But KCM AFDDs add a crucial extra layer:
Arc fault detection – the leading cause of hidden electrical fires.
