The S15L Series: Bright & Versatile In-Line Sensor Status Indicators

As industrial automation applications continue to grow and become more technically advanced, the threat of unplanned downtime is just as relevant today as it was 10 years ago. In 2017, the Vanson Bourne Research Study found that roughly 82% of companies experienced unplanned downtime in the 3 years prior to the report. The cost of this downtime was estimated to be close to £1.5million ($2,000,000).

In the same report, it was found that 70% of companies lack complete awareness of when equipment is due for maintenance or upgrade. That’s where Banner’s S15L Series of in-line sensor indicators come in.

15 mm in diameter, the S15L series is equipped with a two-colour LED indicator light that can be retrospectively connected to a power source and a sensor to indicate power and output status. Its in-line connection, over-moulded design and bright LEDs create a simple and cost-effective solution that can be applied to not only Banner sensors, but to most 4- or 5-pin devices with an output.

Avro Vulcan & Kempston Controls Take To The Sky

At the start of the year, Kempston Controls partnered with Eaton to provide the Vulcan to the Sky Trust with a donation of rare fuses which are essential to keep Vulcan XH558 airworthy. The Bussmann 059-0125 and 011-9127 fuses are used in the flying control motor circuits and are susceptible to fatigue due to the cycling of the motors driving the hydraulic pumps that drive the flying control surfaces.

About the Vulcan To The Sky Trust

Vulcan To The Sky Trust is a charitable organisation who in 2005 began to restore the retired Vulcan XH558 delta-winged bomber, and in 2007, after more than 14 years of being grounded, completed three successful test flights. In 2008, after another successful test flight, the Civil Aviation Authority granted permission for Vulcan XH558 to perform at the RAF Waddington Air show.

In early 2015 the trust announced that the current 2015 flying season would be it’s last. Although the goal was to keep the Vulcan flying for a few more years, at the start of 2015 the ‘technical authorities’ (BAE Systems, Marshall Aerospace & Defence Group and Rolls-Royce) legally required to support the airworthiness of the Vulcan announced the withdrawal of their support – XH558 was forced to cease flying in October 2015. Although the aircraft was safe to fly, the structure and systems were then more than 10% beyond the flying hours of any other Vulcan and the knowledge base of Vulcan-era technologies within the technical authorities was deemed to have fallen too far to support the aircraft.

Since grounding Vulcan XH558 the Trust has established an education programme which works closely with schools, colleges and other organisations. While still being kept airworthy and capable of accelerating dramatically along the runway, the Vulcan XH558 is being used to inspire and educate new generations of young people.

Vulcan LandingAbout the Avro Vulcan XH558

Vulcan XH558 is a jet-powered delta-winged strategic nuclear bomber operated, when in service, by the Royal Air Force during the Cold War. An iconic example of British engineering with XH558 being the last Vulcan in service until 1984 when it was retired. With an impressive list of technical achievements including being the first successful large delta wing aircraft, leading directly to Concorde and the Space Shuttle, XH588 could deliver performance and agility so close to a jet fighter’s that it was given a fighter-style control column.

The XH558 first flew in 1960, and was one of the few Vulcan models converted for a maritime reconnaissance role in 1973, and then as an air-to-air refuelling tanker in 1982. In 1984, once withdrawn, it continued with the RAF’s Vulcan Display Flight, performing until 1992.

In 1993 it was sold to C Walton Ltd who used it for ground-based displays at their Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome in Leicestershire until 1999. Through a combination of public donations and lottery funding, it was restored to fully functional condition by the Vulcan To The Sky Trust, who returned it to flight on 18 October 2007.

We caught up with both Matthew & Mike to learn more about them:

Matthew Law:

I worked for Kromschroder for 21 years starting off as an apprentice where I trained in the assembly of pipe trains for customers. From there I moved into AutoCAD design where I designed the pipe trains I was building. After this I started to get more involved in technical support of the components in the UK, where I would support customers on the selection of components, any issues they had and alternative options. Then I moved into external sales where I managed customer accounts and finally worked as a senior technical sales engineer where I was designing burner systems for customers.

My strengths are:

  • Kromschroder components: the full range from basic gas valves through to complex burner controllers.
  • Working with customers on alternative options if parts are discontinued. This can also be alternatives from other suppliers
  • System integration: working with customers on how the components they are using impact the system they have, safety and operational wise.
  • Customer care: liaising with customers to support with component selection, spare parts and installation requirements. Furthermore, programming of burner controllers and alternative system controls that could help improve the efficiency of kilns, furnaces etc.
  • I am very familiar with EN746-2 which is the standard for thermal processing equipment and covers the safety requirements for fuel handling that are part of industrial furnaces.
  • I am a very approachable person and love the challenge of a difficult requirement or question where I have to really think in order to come up with a solution.

Mike Evans:

I’m looking forward to working with the dynamic & diverse team at Kempston Controls. I bring more than 30 years of experience from the industrial process heating industry and a passion for problem-solving. My previous roles have included Sales Account Management, Project Management and Combustion Systems Engineer at Eclipse Combustion Ltd. I worked more recently as a Burner Solution Engineer at Elster Metering Ltd (part of Honeywell Thermal Solutions).

At Eclipse and Honeywell we served all industries and worked closely with equipment supplied by Elster/Jeavons, Kromschroder, ASCO, Burkert, Karl Dungs, Siemens, Bryan Donkin & Honeywell to name but a few.

Following our previous post, we’re taking a closer look at the Nuvo Player Portfolio from Legrand.

Conveniently available in both wired and wireless configurations, the portfolio makes it easy to build a solution suitable for home or commercial environments. Each device allows access to both networked music libraries and the near-infinite variety of Internet Radio. So, whether it’s a new system or modernising an existing installation the Nuvo range can support any product.

Single-Zone Devices – Multiroom system.

A single multi-room amplifier is typically designed to run a single zone and can be wirelessly synchronised with multiple other amplifiers of the same kind to cover multiple zones, working in a modular approach.

For example, in a domestic environment, you’d ideally want to install speakers in different rooms such as kitchen, bathroom and bedroom while retaining the possibility of playing and controlling music for each room independently. To do so, you would need to use a single zone amplifier for each room.

By using a modular approach, each amplifier is connected through WiFi or using an ethernet connection. This gives you the ability to expand the system while controlling the volume and music of each zone or multiple zones through an App on your phone.
